2001 YUKON DENALI & YUKON XL DENALI
GMCs Ultimate Agile, Stylish and Refined Full-Size SUVs
Hot on the heels of GMCs market launch of its all-new Yukon and Yukon XL, GMC introduces two additional full-size sport utility vehicles that are sure to cement GMCs reputation for professional grade trucks -- upscale, refined and distinctive. The all-new 2001 Yukon Denali and the for-the-first-time Yukon XL Denali enter the market with exclusive performance and agility capabilities, unique exterior styling and a new level of premium amenities.
"In 2001, the Yukon Denali and new Yukon XL Denali will set a new standard for full-size SUV agility," said Denny ODonnell, Yukon brand manager. "These two distinctive trucks offer a host of unique and exclusive features. Their agility is significantly enhanced by a more powerful powertrain, they are stylishly refined in appearance, and they include comfort and convenience features that make them easy to live with. But most important, they are very easy to drive and more fun to use."

MODEL LINE-UP
The 2001 Yukon Denali is available as a single, eight-passenger, all-wheel-drive (AWD) model, with a new advanced full-time AWD system and superior powertrain. It is powered by a 325-horsepower Vortec 6000 V8, which not only provides more power and better performance than the Vortec 5700 it replaces, but also more than the Vortec 6000 currently used in other GMC trucks. The engine mates to a more fuel-efficient and enhanced new 4L60-E HD (heavy duty) electronically-controlled four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.
And, for the first time, a long wheelbase Yukon XL version of the Denali is available for the North American market. It shares the shorter Yukon Denalis powertrain, AWD system, and comfort/convenience features while providing a choice of seven- or eight-passenger seating and the more spacious cargo capacity.
ADVANCED ARCHITECTURE
The 2001 Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali benefit from major upgrades, introduced on the all-new Yukon and Yukon XL trucks last year, that contribute to the agility and maneuverability of these SUVs. The list of class-leading architectural attributes includes:
This new platform excels in customer satisfaction thanks to its world-class ride and surprisingly agile handling.
COMMANDING POWERTRAIN
The 2001 Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali introduce the most powerful powertrain available in any full-sized half-ton SUV. Their superior new powertrain includes an enhanced Vortec 6000 V8, standard on Denalis, which adds class-leading power and torque as a natural extension of this truck's unsurpassed agility. Combine that with the new 4L60-E HD electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and an advanced full-time all-wheel-drive system and you have extraordinary responsiveness. According to ODonnell, "Drivers are going to be pleasantly surprised at just how powerful, agile, easy-to-maneuver, and smooth-riding these vehicles are even when trailering."
ENHANCED VORTEC 6000 V8
The Denali exclusive enhanced Vortec 6000 V8 features new cast-aluminum cylinder heads, with unique exhaust and intake seats, intake valves and a new cylinder head gasket. In addition to reducing weight the new heads improve durability and performance by dissipating heat more quickly, reducing overall cooling requirements and allowing increased spark advance. The new intake and exhaust ports borrowed from the 2001 Corvette design allow enhanced air flow in an out of the combustion chamber, increasing engine power. Add to that more aggressive cam profiles (longer duration, higher lift for intake and exhaust valve events), and a free-flowing dual-catalyst exhaust system, and the net result is the best combination of power and torque available from any SUV under 8600-lb GVWR import or domestic on the market.
The Vortec 6000 V8s 325 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 370 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm stand tall in comparison with the Lincoln Navigator 5.4-liter V8's 300 horsepower and 355 lb-ft of torque. And while the Navigator's smaller engine suffers a precipitous drop off in torque after its peak, the Vortec 6000 V8 engine's output curve is so broad and flat that 90-percent of the maximum torque is available all the way from 1600 to 5200 rpm. That difference will certainly be appreciated by customers who take advantage of the Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali's ability to tow large boats and travel trailers. The enhanced Vortec 6000 V8 also brings reduced maintenance (100,000-mile tune-ups, 150,000-mile coolant life), improved durability (systems tested to 200,000 miles), and lower exhaust emissions.
HEAVY-DUTY FOUR-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Backing up this potent engine is a new heavy-duty edition of the 4L60-E four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Upgrades engineered specifically for this application include higher-capacity gear sets, extra clutch plates, larger-diameter clutch rollers, and various processing revisions. The result is an 20% increase in torque capacity and an expected lifetime durability of 150,000 miles. The combination of a 3.06:1 first gear with a 0.70:1 fourth gear provides excellent launch acceleration, with or without a heavy load attached, and quiet, fuel-efficient cruising at highway speeds.
FULL-TIME ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE SYSTEM
Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali also leap-frog competitive full-size SUVs with their move to an innovative all-wheel-drive system. In contrast to the part-time and on-demand drivelines in current use, this system is permanently engaged for both dry-pavement and slippery-surface driving. The New Venture Gear transfer case at the heart of this system uses a cast magnesium housing to save 7 kg of weight in comparison to last year's AutoTrac transfer case; likewise, front and rear prop (drive) shafts are aluminum, both to save weight and to minimize vibration.
Inside, the key transfer case component (that provides functions absent in less sophisticated competitive SUV systems) is a planetary-type limited-slip center differential. The purpose of this device is to route torque from the transmission to the front and rear axles while permitting each axle to turn at a different rotational speed when necessary. (As any vehicle rounds a corner on dry pavement, all four wheels turn at a different speed. Likewise, the front axle turns at a slightly different speed from the rear axle, hence the need for a center differential with full-time all-wheel drive.)
During development of the Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali, GM truck engineers determined the optimum torque split at 38% front wheels and 62% rear wheels in order to deliver maximum performance over the full spectrum of road and weather conditions. That ideal ratio was achieved by arranging the power flow through the transfer case's center differential. Torque from the transmission enters this device via planet gears held in permanent mesh with both a sun gear at the hub of the differential and a ring gear rotating at its periphery. The front axle is mechanically linked to the smaller diameter sun gear and the rear axle is driven by the larger diameter ring gear to provide the desired 38% / 62% torque split.
A viscous-type limited-slip device integral with the center differential prevents uncontrolled wheelspin in the event traction conditions vary under the Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali's four tires. As traction at one wheel or one axle diminishes, a silicone fluid sealed within the limited-slip device automatically begins redirecting torque to the axle with superior grip. That action is so smooth and progressive that all the driver notices is continued forward progress unimpeded by adverse road conditions.
Another standard feature is a locking rear differential to redistribute torque when one rear wheel begins to slip. A synthetic lubricant is used in the rear axle to help minimize operating temperatures during heavy towing, improving axle longevity.
Full-time all-wheel-drive means no buttons to press or gears to shift in order to achieve optimum performance at all times. In addition to slippery-road stability and control benefits, this system also pays dividends in ordinary dry-pavement driving. Distributing the engine's torque through four tires, instead of just two, leaves adhesion in reserve for more agile cornering maneuvers. Driveline durability and tire-tread life are enhanced. German brands renowned for sporting performance have long equipped their top sedans, sports cars, and mid-size SUVs with all-wheel-drive in pursuit of optimum handling. Thanks to the 2001 Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali, the most sophisticated driveline going is now available in a more capable full-sized SUV.
SMOOTH-RIDE SUSPENSION
Premium smooth-ride suspension calibrations are engineered to take full advantage of the new-found power and driveline upgrades. The standard Z55 AutorideÔ system uses an electronic controller to scrutinize shock absorber movement 1000 times per second. Appropriate damping changes to suit road conditions on a real-time basis can be made in 15 to 20 milliseconds. Self-leveling rear shock absorbers are also included to maintain a flat attitude with heavy loads or a trailer attached. Michelin Cross-Terrain touring radial tires, size P265 /70R-17, provide the final link to the pavement. These 17-inch, comfortable-riding, long-lasting, high-traction tires are mounted to attractive six-spoke machined-face cast aluminum wheels.
Brand Manager Denny O'Donnell sums up the Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali's unsurpassed agility bolstered by 325 horsepower and all-wheel-drive with outspoken enthusiasm, "These vehicles drive more like a Firebird TransAm than a truck. Its hard to believe you can have this much fun with something that will haul so much cargo!"
DISTINCTIVE EXTERIOR DESIGN
Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali benefit from an all-new exterior design for the 2001 model year to move them to the head of the premium full-sized SUV class in appearance and sophistication. Overall height and width are slightly increased to provide major improvements in interior room, comfort, and utility. Yukon Denali is right-sized to fit standard parking spaces and garages with a length of 198.9 inches, a width of 78.9-inches, and a height of 76.2 inches. Yukon XL Denali also emphasizes convenience and practicality with a garageable 219.3-inch overall length, a height of 76.8 inches, and a width of 78.9 inches.
The front-end design is prominent and powerful looking to yield what designer Clark Lincoln calls "an unmistakable down-the-road visual signature." Pierced with over 300 cooling-air inlets and polished to a brilliant sheen, the grille has the look of industrial architecture. A bold, red GMC insignia is surrounded by a chromed surround that melds harmoniously with body-contoured halogen headlamps. Lincoln accented the round headlamp reflectors with radiant lines that he says were inspired by the Navajo symbol for the sun. Low beams use projector-beam technology to illuminate the immediate road ahead brightly and evenly. Daytime running lamps are integrated with the wrap-around turn-signal lenses.
A single-piece bumper fascia encompasses two recessed tow hooks, round fog lamps, and a four-bar lower grille. Immediately behind the flexible fascia is a bumper beam made of glass-filled sheet-molding-compound that's slightly lighter than the steel component it replaces and impervious to corrosion. Unique to the truck world, this composite beam is part of a pre-assembled module that attaches to the vehicle with fewer fasteners and improved fit.
The Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denalis fascia is painted body color to establish a monochromatic theme for the entire exterior. Door handles and their escutcheons, running boards, front wheel spats, rear-view mirror caps, lower body moldings, and the rear bumper all receive the attractive monochromatic treatment. A light-weight aluminum lift-glass/tailgate provides convenient access to the roomy cargo hold. Integrated with the rear step bumper is a receiver hitch assembly engineered to tow trailers up to a maximum 8400 pounds for Yukon XL Denali and 8500 for Yukon Denali with a tongue weight up to 1000 pounds. The molded-composite step pads used on both side-step and rear-bumper surfaces have matching grip surfaces. As the crowning touch, the Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali's exhaust pipe tip is a brushed stainless steel.
SUMPTUOUS INTERIOR TRAPPINGS
Car converts seeking safe haven in a more versatile and capable SUV are well cared for in the leather-trimmed Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali. Building on the comfortable and complete interior offered in the first-generation line, the new-for 2001 models add a few features and refinements that are unique in the truck world such as tone-on-tone seats, instrument panel, and door trim. Second-row legroom is increased a substantial 2.4 inches (Yukon Denali) and third-row accommodations are new to the Yukon Denali line.
Premium front bucket seats provide the absolute ultimate in comfort and adjustability. Belts are mounted directly to the seat frame and side air bags are incorporated in the backrests to make safety a convenience. In addition to six-way power position adjustment, these seats offer power-adjustable backrest and side bolsters, articulating headrests, power lumbar adjustment, and heat for both the backrests and cushions. Handy storage pockets are attached to the rear of each backrest and the driver's seat automatically moves to one of two memory preset positions at the touch a button.
Yukon Denali's second-row seats are a 50/50 split-folding design to clear the way for cargo. Heated cushions are standard. A handy alternative to a 60-40-split second row bench for Yukon XL Denali customers is a pair of reclining bucket seats, also heated, with space down the middle ready access to the third row.
The Yukon Denali's standard third-row seat is split in the middle so one or both halves can be flipped and folded as necessary to clear the way for camping gear or a large-screen television set. If more space is needed, a simple unlatching action allows each 44-pound seat half to be carried into the garage using a handle that's provided. The Yukon Denali XL's third-row seat is a single-piece design, given the 45.7 cubic feet of cargo space available behind that seat, but it too folds, flips, and detaches for removal allowing over 131 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the second row folded down.
Tone-on-tone leather trim is standard in both of these uplevel GMC SUVs. Sew patterns, foam construction, and headrest designs are exclusive to the new Denali models.
A multi-function center console has also been configured just for this application. The deep main storage bin is illuminated and fitted with retention slots for six CDs. A double top lid provides a comfortable arm rest and internal storage for a cell phone or writing instruments. Ahead of the storage bin are covered compartments for two cupholders and an ashtray and lighter. The touch-to-open lids are damped for smooth operation. Built into the rear surface of the console there are two additional power receptacles, a pair of fold-down cupholders, audio controls, headphone jacks, and a courtesy light for rear-seat passenger use.
The console's forward surfaces blend into the instrument panel. A CD changer conveniently located in the lower instrument panel accepts up to six CDs in sequence at the touch of a load button. Further forward, there's a handy trip computer and a covered power outlet. Supplementing the driver's information center built into the instrument cluster, the trip computer calculates and displays remaining range, average and instantaneous fuel economy, trip time and mileage. Separate logs can be maintained for business and personal use of the vehicle. The trip computer's electronic display and control buttons are also used to set personal preference features such as operation of the automatic power door locks.
Trim features that establish the Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali as a cut above the SUV herd include: soothing teal-green instrument lighting, cloth-covered sun visors with pull-out extensions and illuminated visor vanity mirrors, a color-keyed and leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant audio controls, theater dimming of interior lamps, a leather-covered passenger assist handle, distinctive Denali-logo stitching on the door panels, and black-chrome inside door release handles. Black-cherry woodgrain trim encircles the instrument cluster, the center console, and door-mounted switches. The addition of nine acoustic floor dampers helps achieve one of the quietest SUV interiors on the market. The standard electronic climate control system filters dust and pollen down to 10 microns in size; partitioned air flow helps achieve best-in-class comfort for both front and rear passengers.
The BoseÒ AcoustimassÒ audio system boasts a seven-channel power module, eleven acoustically tailored and equalized speakers, and 250 watts of amplification. A three-channel HomelinkÒ system for commanding up to three remote-control devices such as security gates, yard lights, and garage doors is standard equipment. A factory-installed OnStarÒ communications system with dash-mounted buttons and a microphone in the headliner integrates on-board vehicle electronics with Global Positioning System technology. In addition to various safety and security benefits such as theft recovery and airbag-deployment notification, OnStarÒ offers subscription package upgrades with concierge services that, among many things, help drivers locate restaurants and order concert tickets.
The first generation Yukon Denali introduced for the 1998 model year established GMC as a worthy player at the high end of the rapidly growing full-size SUV segment. During the three years that this product has been on the market, customers voiced an avid enthusiasm for the extra capabilities and amenities that only a dedicated truck maker could offer. In 2001, Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali take the next step forward with some extraordinary character traits unsurpassed agility, exceptional ride and handling, distinctive stylish appearance, a multitude of functional amenities, and more than enough power for any situation.
